Farm History

Shelley and Gary live on their century family farm in the Missouri River Bottoms near Farley, Mo. Their vegetable business is an extension of their traditional farming operation. The farm has been in the Oberdiek family for several generations, since they came to America from Germany. Originally, the family sold logs off the property until it was open enough to farm. Since then, the Oberdieks have been growing corn, soybeans, tobacco and hogs. They have also have had a small cattle operation in the past.

Currently, they sell locally grown fruits and vegetables, especially sweet corn and tomatoes, at Leavenworth, Kan., Parkville, Mo, and Kansas City Farmer’s Markets. Shelley is manager of the Parkville Farmers Market and her family has attended the market for 10 years. Their 3 children, Tarra, Zach, and Sydney, also help at the markets.
